Seven of us on Graham’s ride from Pennington Flash to Sale Water Park today including a guest, Stuart, who joined us for his first ride. We got off to a sticky start when Roy turned up without his bike helmet. John P came to the rescue by contacting his better half who agreed to meet up with us at Astley Colliery with a spare helmet for Roy.
It was a pleasant morning with a light wind in our faces as we headed out across Leigh to the East Lancs and on to Astley Green to collect the bike helmet. Graham set a fair pace and we were soon passing through Irlam and onwards to cross Manchester Ship Canal. Graham had warned us that we had to negotiate some stepping stones when crossing a brook at Sale Water Park. Most, but not all, of us made a good job of it though nobody got wet! We had lunch at Jackson’s Boat pub – a lovely setting though unfortunately most of us found the food rather disappointing.
The trip back to Leigh involved quite a lot of towpath alongside the Mersey, Bridgewater and Leeds-Liverpool Canals. The new section of towpath at Astley Green is finished now so no more trudging through the mud, the tarmac surface however could have done with flattening out a bit better! We were back at Pennington before 3 and just caught a light rain shower near the end. Thanks to Graham for devising the route of a little over 34 miles and leading another enjoyable ride and of course to Geoff for backmarking.
